AmaKhatholika aya kubaphristi ukuze athethelelwe izono zawo ngoba uJesu wanika abaPhostoli amandla okuthethelela izono. Esakramenteni leSivumo, izono zithethelelwe ngokusebenza kukaNkulunkulu ngokusebenzisa ithuluzi lompristi.

Njengoba amaVangeli esibonisa, UJesu wanika abaPhostoli igunya lokuthethelela izono ngobusuku bokuVuka Kwakhe, ethi kubo, “Ukuthula makube kinina. Amanye amaKristu angewona amaKhatholika angase aqinise umyalo kaJakobe ‘wokuvuma izono omunye komunye’ (v. 16) iwubufakazi obumelene nesidingo sokuvuma izono kumpristi.
